More SharePoint site templates available

Since the introduction of this feature it’s been pretty static. But now Microsoft have released a number of new team and communication site templates. These templates allow the quick application of a template to a pre-created SharePoint site to visualise the art of the possible. These along with the SharePoint lookbook, which also has been updated with new stunning sites, This includes a new LGBTQ+ Employee Resource Group site template to uplift employee resource groups, support the career growth of people in your organization, and to help advance equality and allyship for all.

How to apply a site template

For a previously created site these can be applied by users with site owner permissions (or higher) by clicking the SharePoint Cog to access Settings and then selecting Apply a site template. For a new site that has been created the user is asked if they wish to use a template when they first access the site with a dialog box shown to the user.

Clicking the Browse templates button will display the available templates for the type of site created (i.e. Team or Communication). So for a team site the following is displayed:

Looking ahead

Microsoft are going to introduce connected templates and a new site creation process so combining SharePoint and Teams templates together for a better experience and yes, even more templates. Also look out for the Template history under the Site Information panel which is currently being rolled out. This not only the template(s) that were applied to the site but also all site script actions that were executed successfully or failed.
