Do you need Microsoft Teams premium?

Since Microsoft Teams first went live, Microsoft have continued to add new features and enhancements to the service, all included in the original Microsoft Teams license.

Now, Microsoft has made the decision to introduce a new Microsoft Teams license, Microsoft Teams premium. This license includes additional features, some new, some old.

These features include:

  • The ability to apply branding to meeting lobbies and customise backgrounds
  • Translate post-meeting transcriptions
  • Set up a green room for webinar presenters to communicate in prior to the start
  • Better management of webinars including the ability to create a waiting list, manually approve registrants and send reminder emails
  • Adding watermarks to meetings
  • Controlling who can record meetings and prevent copy/paste in meeting chat
  • Analytics in Virtual Appointments
  • Sending SMS notifications regarding virtual appointments
  • Better management of virtual appointment queues

There is a zero-cost trial available for up to 25 licenses which can be “purchased” in the Microsoft 365 admin center to allow features to be trialled for 30 days.

So does everyone in your tenant need this license? Well, no. It’s only required for those users that require the additional features, such as those creating meetings or webinars requiring these enhancements. For everyone else, whilst the branding is nice, as an organisation you need to decide who the features provide value to.

One of the advantages of Microsoft creating multiple licenses is that you can decide who needs this functionality. You can therefore only pay the extra for the additional features for those to whom it will provide added benefit.
