Cultural change

Organisations are embedding diversity and inclusion into their overall strategies with plans that ensure they go above and beyond to create a diverse and inclusive workplace for all. Late 2020 – early 2021, Microsoft released its annual global diversity and inclusion report showing their transparency in terms of growth and change over the past years. Microsoft state;

“We expect each of us – not matter our level or function – to play an active role in creating environments where people of diverse backgrounds are excited to bring all of who they are in order to do their best work.”

Microsoft continue to invest time into making internal changes and implement new strategies to help build a stronger diverse culture and inclusive workplace.

Business leaders must remember embedding a D&I strategy is not something that can be completed over night, nor is it a job for one specific role. This is something that needs to be strategically thought about and planned by the entire leadership team. Businesses must reconsider their objects to achieve systemic and cultural change. Below are some areas to concentrate on when taking the first step towards building a diverse and transparent workforce.

  1. Link inclusion directly to the existing company values and share this with the organisation. Use traditional communication methods to drive the inclusive message.

Alongside this, here are a few activities risual employees are doing to help improve our diverse and inclusive working culture.

  • Revisiting existing policies and strategies.
  • Continuing to educate internal employees for a better understanding of what we can all do together to make a change.
  • Internal diversity and inclusion team will be driving awareness campaigns.
  • Revaluating the recruitment to minimise any unconscious biases from the hiring stage.
  • Using existing Microsoft technology to help better create an accessible remote workforce.
  • Nurturing existing transparent atmosphere to encourage a diverse mixture of views and ideas.
