Power Platform 2021 Updates

The next Dynamics 365 and Power Platform release waves are planned in for 2021 with a host of new updates that will take your automated business solutions to the next level. We’ve digested all the planned changes and listed the highlights below.

Get ready to add more mixed reality functionality to your business applications using Mixed Reality (MR). Measure distances and volumes in real-time using the “Measure in MR” component coming to Power Apps in February 2021. These include adding pre-defined 3D shapes or other 2D and 3D polygons. Any measurements captured through Mixed Reality are passed back through to the Power App to be entered into your data sources of choice including Dataverse (renamed from Common Data Service). Additionally, custom objects can be added to your Mixed Reality space.

Looking to get more client engagement? Power Apps Portals and Power Virtual Agents have received a few to updates that’ll be of interest. As of November 2020, users are now able to add Power Virtual Agent components to their portals, this allows clients to get in contact easily and have most queries answered using an automated bot. As of February 2021, expect to see more web API functionality. At this time, we’re unsure what this could hold but we’re expecting more functionality that helps developers interact with Power App Portals and add features your help your client base finds what they’re after.

A new Dynamics 365 app for Windows is ready for early access from January 2021, this will allow users to access all their Dynamics 365 applications in once place from their windows device. One of the key benefits is that users will now be able to enable offline mode from their windows devices whilst out in the field. This works using mobile offline synchronisation. Microsoft have planned the implementation of Power Apps component framework for canvas apps. This enables developers to create their own UI extensions for Canvas Power Apps. These packages are re-useable against multiple Canvas Power Apps across the organisation or be packaged and distributed. Public Preview for this functionality has been available since February 2020 however is planned to be generally available in March 2021.
