Getting started with Power BI

If you have ever had to set up or begin learning to use new technology, then you will know that it can be frustrating and long-winded. Fortunately, there are plenty of things that you can do when adopting Power BI to make these processes a lot smoother and get you up and running much quicker.

Get the app. One of the very first things that you should do when adopting Power BI is get the desktop app. The desktop app has been designed by Microsoft to be a smooth efficient tool that you can use on the go. It will allow you to view data and reports in real time, where ever you are and if that’s not enough, downloading the app will also mean that you get automatic monthly updates of Power BI, meaning you don’t have to do anything to get the latest features!

Go data hunting. Of course, to begin using Power BI, you’re going to need some data. Where you get this data from is entirely up to you. Thanks to Power BI’s huge range of data sources, you can analyse data from pretty much anywhere, Excel, Azure, online services, even social media accounts! If you still can’t find the data source that you would like to use, Power BI allows you to create your own custom connector, meaning that you will be able to go get and analyse your data no matter where it is stored.

Model your data. If you are new to Power BI, then modelling your data will be a process that you will have to learn about and follow some tutorials to set it up. Nevertheless, it is extremely important that you do model your data as this will connect multiple data sources in Power BI using relationships. This will define how your data sources are connected with each other and allow you to create amazing visualisations of multiple data sources at once.

The fun part! Once you have shaped and modelled your data, you come to the part that you’ve been waiting for which is creating stunning visuals for your data! To create your own reports, you can use the native visuals already built in Power BI that you can drag and drop. If you don’t see what you’d like to use, you can import visuals that people make around the world by clicking the ellipsis in the ‘Visualisations’ box. This is a very brief description of how to make reports, but this part is entirely personal. Take some time playing around with different styles and combinations of data to produce the reports that are perfect for you.

Answer your own questions. So, you’ve set up your reports and your data has never looked so good. Now you can start analysing it and getting true value from it. With the Q&A feature in Power BI, you can ask absolutely anything about your data, and you will get the answer within seconds. This feature is so smart that it will actually suggest questions that you may want the answers to before you even ask them! Just another incredible Power BI feature that will allow you to get value from your data that has never been achievable before.

If Power BI is something that you think could boost your business and create value, then don’t be afraid of the unknown! Many people miss out on the incredible benefits of applications such as Power BI because they don’t even know they need it.
