Microsoft Azure Network Performance Monitor’s Service Connectivity Monitor has now been made generally available to the public!

Previously known as Service Endpoint Monitor back when it was first released in preview, NPM has just this week been released to general availability along with its new name. Customers can now monitor connectivity to services such as applications, URLs, VMs and network devices. This also determines where the network is being bottlenecked.

Because customers have started to use multiple subscriptions over multiple regions it is becoming increasingly difficult to determine the cause of an outage or reason bad performance. These issues can be caused by a number of things including application, stack, cluster or network issues. The Service Connectivity Monitor integrates monitoring and visualisation of the performance of internally hosted and cloud services. This allows customers to create connectivity tests from key points in their networks to their services to help identify if it is a network problem or a application one. With the topology map feature customers can locate links and interfaces experiencing high latency helping to identify internal network segments with issues.

How can I determine whether its an application or network problem?

Customers can determine whether the application connectivity issue is caused by the application itself or  the network by corelating the application response time with the network latency.

Identify network bottlenecks!

Customers can view all paths and interfaces between their company’s premises and application endpoint on NPM’s interactive topology map. This includes not only end-to-end network visibility but also view latency contributed by each interface to help identify the trouble causing segment.

Monitor service connectivity from multiple different vantage points from a central view!

Customers can monitor connectivity to their services from multiple locations like branch offices, datacentres, office sites and cloud infrastructures from a central view. By installing the NPM agent at the vantage points customers can get the performance visibility from where the users are accessing the application from.

Monitor end-to-end connectivity services!

Customers can monitor the total response time, network latency and packet loss between the nodes in their corporate perimeter and the services they use such as websites, SaaS, PaaS, Azure services, file servers, SQL servers and many more. Alerts can be set up to get proactively notified whenever there is issues with the response time, loss or latency when they breach the thresholds. In addition to this there is a tool called the ‘network state recorder’ to go back in time to view a networks state at that time.

Monitor connectivity to Microsoft services using built-in tests for Microsoft Office 365 and Dynamics 365!

Service Connectivity Monitor provides built-in tests that allow a ‘one-click’ setup experience to monitor the connectivity to Microsoft Dynamics and Office 365  services, without any pre configuration. Because the capability maintains a list of endpoints associated with these services it is not necessary to enter the different endpoints associated with each service.

Create custom queries and views

All data that is exposed graphically through NPM’s UI are also available through the log analytics search. Customers are able to perform interactive analysis of data in the repository, correlate data from different sources, create custom alerts and views and export the data to Excel, PowerBI or a shareable link.
