Photos with Exchange 2013 and Lync 2013

Adding or amending photos when you have both Lync 2013 and Exchange 2013 deployed is significantly easier than it used to be prior to these releases. This is mainly due to where these photos are stored. Previously, photos used to be held in the thumbnailphoto attribute of a User object in Active Directory. Now, these photos can be stored within your Exchange mailbox and the process you follow to get them there is really easy.

Obviously, the pre-requisites for this are that you have Exchange 2013 and Lync 2013 and that your account has been provisioned on both of these platforms. You also need to have a photo (preferably a nice HD photo) stored where you can access it.

First, goto your Lync 2013 client and click on the photo (or where the photo should be if you are uploading for the first time) – Circled in red below:

Select “Edit or Remove Picture”

This opens a web page to allow you to browse to the photo you want to use. Click on “Browse” and then locate your photo. Once you have selected it, click on “Save”:

That’s it! Your new photo will appear in Lync and Outlook.
